Lillian Gish

Birth Name: Lillian Diana de Guiche
Born: October 14, 1893 in Springfield, Ohio
Died: February 27, 1993 in New York

Lillian Gish is one of many silent movie actors and she was in many silent films until 1987. A few of those films are  The Birth of a Nation, Duel in the sun, Night of the Hunter and Whales of August. After 10 years of acting she stared in a film called 'An Unseen Enemy.' Her debuet talkies were only successful at different times because the publics attitude in style of films.

Lillian was also the 'first lady of the American Cinema ' .Lillian's career all started when she was 6. Her father was a heavy alcoholic so Lillian and her sister had to find their own ways to earn money. One of the ways they did this was by acting in their local theatre. They did this every weekend and earned money each week. They spent this money on the family instead of themselves because their dad was lazy, fat and greedy.

Their mum would work all day to earn money for them but they never had enough to spend on them because her dad would spend it on alcohol.

When she grew up, her acting career expanded and she was in many movies and made a lot of money. She was never to popular but was good enough to be chosen for many movies.  Linnian won many awards in her life time and here are some of them:

  • Academy Honorary Award ,  
  • AFI Life Achievement Award
  • Kennedy Centre Honour

Lillian never got married or had children Mainly because she was too busy ( or as she thought) Although The association between Gish and D. W. Griffith was so close that some suspected a romantic connection.Lillian Gish was the sister of actress Dorothy Gish. She was a survivor of the 1918 flu pandemic, having caught the flu during the filming of Broken Blossoms.
She died peacefully in her sleep of heart failure on February 27, 1993 at age 99, 8 months before what would have been her 100th birthday. She is interred beside her sister Dorothy at Saint Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in New York City. Her estate was valued at several million dollars, the bulk of which went toward the creation of the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Trust.

Lillian Gish will always be remembered as a amazing silent movie actor and a role model for young children to tell them that you can do what you want to do no matter your abilities and surroundings.
